Data and experimental response

ADVICE

FOR A-LEVEL BIOLOGY

You'll notice from your specification that in any one of Papers 1 or 2 at AS, or Papers 1, 2 or 3 at A-level, you can (and will) be tested on "relevant practical skills". In addition, at A-level Paper 3 will also contain questions on "practical techniques". These will fall under assessment objective 2 (making up 40-45% of the exam questions) and assessment objective 3 (making up 20-25% of the exam questions), as opposed to assessment objective 1 (making up 30-35% of the exam questions) which will basically test you on your subject knowledge. The assessment objectives read as follows:

AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures

AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures:

  • in a theoretical context
  • in a practical context
  • when handling qualitative data
  • when handling quantitative data

AO3: Analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information, ideas and evidence, including in relation to issues, to:

  • make judgements and reach conclusions
  • develop and refine practical design and procedures. As a result, you need to be very familiar with the skills needed to comment onand analyse data and experimental techniques. The questions below are designed to help you do that.
